Martin Luther University pharmacists Halle Wittenberg have discovered a new way to test for coronavirus using mass spectrometry.
The German university stated that the test is specific, as it measures protein components that are specific only for the new coronavirus – SARS-Cov-2.
“We measure peptides that come from viruses, not genetic material,” explained Andrea Sinz, who worked on this study.
To discover this new way of testing, the scientists used a solution with which people infected with coronavirus rinsed their mouths.
This method of testing could replace PCR testing, which is widely used around the world, in the future, scientists say.
